Why You Should Visit the Capital of Jamaica

Posted on July 26, 2008

The capital of Jamaica is Kingston and is the largest city on the island. It is situated on the islands southeastern coast and its natural harbor is protected by a long sand spit known as the Palisadoes.

The capital is actually served by two airports the main one being Norman Manley International into which all flights from across the world arrives in at. Whilst the smaller airport called Tinson Pen Aerodrome is the one that deals mainly with domestic flights (i.e. those coming in from other islands in the Caribbean).

The city of Kingston was not actually founded until 1692 and this was only because the area of Port Royal was destroyed by a large earthquake at the time. In fact before this earthquake the area that is now Kingston was used for agricultural purposes only.

However it was another 11 years after the earth quake hitting Port Royal did the town of Kingston begin to flourish. At this time a surveyor by the name of John Goffe chose to draw up plans for the town which were based on grid. It then took a further 13 years from 1703 until 1716 for the town to become the largest on Jamaica. Because of its growth it also became the center of trade that was occurring on the island.

When building started to happen people were only allowed to buy the same amount of land that they had originally owned when they lived in Port Royal and only that which is situated on the sea front. But gradually the merchants of the town became wealthier and so they began to buy land further in so that they could build themselves new homes rather than living above their places of business.
