Months July and August Were Named After Whom
Posted on August 9, 2008
Many people ask the question as months July and August were named after whom? The simple answer comes as July was originally known as Quintilis (fifth month) based on the Roman Calender, but later it was renamed as July for providing favors to Julius Caesar. Silarly August was known earlier as Sextilis (sixth month), and later it was renamed Augustus devoted to Caesar Augustus.
As of now all of us know that an year has mostly fixed number of days except for leap year and also the months have fixed number of days, with an exception of February which has 28 days in general and 29 days in the leap year. Old Roman calendar was not having the facility of fixed number of days either for months or for the whole year. And there was only 10 months altogether. It was Julius Caesar who proposed the modern calendar.
It was roman senate who decided on the names of months July and Augusts were named after whom? They have renamed the Quintilis to honor the contributions of Julius Caesar in regularizing the months in a year and for bringing out authenticated calendar. Up to that time the calendar was in chaotic conditions without any fixed number of days or a fixed year length.
The name sextilis of the sixth month in the original Roman calendar was replaced by the names augustus after the roman senate approved the change. Augustus was the grand nephew of Julius Caesar and when he took over the reigns of Rome defeating Mark Antony and Cleopatra, the name replacement was mooted by the senate.
