Ski Vacations in Alaska
Posted on July 21, 2008
Alaska - the very name invokes a sense of mystery and awe. And it has some of the finest ski spots in the world. Alyeska Resort - one of the best resorts in Alaska - gets a whopping 631 inches of snow annually and has a 2501 foot vertical drop and a top elevation of 2751 feet …
Surprisingly, though Alaska offers some of the world’s best skiing, the slopes are not usually overcrowded - something very unlike some other regions in the world that offer skiing of a comparable scale. You might not see long lift lines in the Alyeska Resort, and there are 9 lifts - 2 surface lifts, 6 chair lifts and a cable car line. Though most of the 68 trails are designed for intermediate level skiers, skiers of all levels - from beginners to highly skilled experts may be able to ski as well.
One really exciting thing about the resort is that you can ski in the nights … night time skiing is allowed there and this means that your skiing there can be a lot more exciting compared to a lot of other resorts where it is not allowed …
What’s more - it’s not just glaciers and snow capped mountains that you get to see at night, but also the famed Northern Lights. That alone should make the experience a lot more thrilling ! No wonder Skiing Magazine ranks this resort very highly.
Ski Season In the Alyeska Resort
The ski season starts in mid November and lasts until mid April. In April, the length of a day is approximately sixteen hours while in December the day lasts only for about seven hours. This makes the night time skiing not just a fancy but a necessity.
Very good accommodation is available too. The Alyeska Prince Hotel is one place you would want to check out if you are particular about staying in elegant rooms and fine dining. You might also plan on visiting other nightlife spots nearby.
Skiing is however not the only activity that the place has to offer. Heliskiing, dog sledding, flight seeing, back country skiing, ice climbing, viewing polar bears and mountaineering are other exciting activities that you might want to check out.
If you are the kind who really loves adventure and is eager to experience every place at its natural best, then one thing you might want to do is visit the resort not in summer or spring but in winter. You get to see Alaska as it really is!
The resort offers fun filled activities for the entire family, and also has some really good attractions as well. This may be as good as a ski vacation can ever get for the family!
